Leadership is commonly viewed as a title, limited to a select few or those who are most experienced. In reality, leadership is a choice. Everyone is capable of leading his or her own life and being a leader at home, at school, among friends, or in the community.
Leader In Me
Shreve Island is proud to be in our 8th year as a Franklin Covey Leader in Me School. The Leader in Me is a whole-school improvement process based on the idea that everyone can be a leader. This evidence-based approach empowers students with the leadership and life-skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.
What can you expect at a Leader in Me School?
Use of 7 Habits language across campus.
Students taking responsibility for the school by participating in classroom and school-wide jobs.
Students owning their learning by setting goals and tracking their progress in their data notebooks.
Celebrations for accomplishing individual, class and school-wide "wildly important" goals (WIGS).
Students working together in the classroom to learn content while strengthening teamwork and social skills.
What are the 7 Habits?
Steven Covey originally introduced these timeless principles in his leadership classic "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". These were later adapted to kids by his son Sean Covey in "7 Habits of Happy Kids".
The 7 Habits teach us to be a leader of ourselves first so that we can lead others effectively.

The Power of the Paradigms
At the core of the Leader in Me training that our staff receives are the Paradigms. Our words and actions reflect the way we view the world and our role as educators. By first shifting our paradigms, we can better serve and empower our students to be leaders of themselves first, and others second.
The Framework
The Leader in Me program is led by the Faculty Lighthouse Team. Each of these leaders take ownership of an area within the Leadership, Culture and Academic components and lead an action team of other faculty members to facilitate the program components around campus. We also have a Junior Lighthouse Team which meets to assist in planning and serve as advisory to the school leadership.
